HISTORY:
In Nigeria before 1906, crude and inadequate methods of combating Fires were employed. During the Colonial Regime in 1906, Fire Fighting became scientific and mechanized.
Industrialization and urbanization in Lagos State necessitated the need to combat fire outbreaks. Hence, with an Act of Parliament in 1963, the Fire Brigade pulled out from the Nigerian Police and became a Paramilitary Safety Organization saddled with responsibilities of Fire Fighting, Saving and Protection of lives and properties, rendering Humanitarian Services and Emergency Responses.
The Fire Service Act of 1963 came into operations on the 1st of February, 1964 with the aim of transferring the Lagos Fire Brigade from the Nigerian Police to the Federal Ministry of Internal Affairs and to be known as the Federal Fire Service. Edo State Fire Service came into existence in July 22, 1967 as the then Mid-West Fire Service with twenty-three Firemen according to the Gazette No. 38 volume 8 of 1971. It later became Bendel State Fire Service on the 17th March, 1976 with the creation of States. With the defunct Bendel State in August 27, 1991, it became Edo State Fire Service.
The State Fire Service has its Headquarters in Ewaise Street and the Operation Unit at Oredo both in Benin City, it currently has four Outstations as namely:
